Autoterm Air 2D Diesel Air Heater with Altitude Kit
Proven heating technology for campers, off-road vehicles, boats and more.
Previously known as the Planar 2D, the Autoterm Air 2D is one of the most popular diesel air heaters for campers, motorhomes, boats and expedition vehicles. Robust, reliable and safe – with extremely low fuel and power consumption – it’s perfect for anyone who wants dependable warmth on the road.
Manufactured in Latvia, it is completely “Made in Europe”.
High quality, great flexibility and perfect for DIY installation
Thanks to its compact design and various control units, the Autoterm Air 2D is suitable for almost any type of travel vehicle – from vans to expedition trucks. It’s also widely used on boats.
Thanks to the E-mark certification, it can be installed without registration – no TÜV approval required and no loss of warranty for self-installation. Of course, if you prefer, our experienced installation partners are happy to take care of it.
Available in 12V for most campers and transporters, and 24V for vehicle electrical systems typically found in truck-based RVs – simply choose the right version for your setup.
Even more flexible installation: Choose the warm air outlet style!
The heater comes with two different warm air outlets, suitable for different spatial conditions and installation setups. You can select the version above.
1. With a straight outlet (standard). Please note that the warm air must be routed away from the heater in as straight a line as possible. The air duct should have only gentle bends and must not make a 90° turn or similar sharp curve immediately after the heater. Otherwise, heat may build up and cause the heater to shut down for safety reasons.
2. With TIGHT SPACE casing. Here, the warm air is routed out of the heater at a specially optimized 90° angle. The outlet can be mounted to the side or upward.
Important: Even though the heaters themselves are identical: If you use a warm air duct to create a bent outlet like in the TIGHT SPACE version, your heater will overheat. So please plan your duct layout before ordering to determine whether the straight or the angled outlet is better suited for your build!
Altitude kit included – ready for any adventure
From Nepal to the Andes: The Air 2D comes with an integrated altitude kit that automatically adjusts combustion to changes in air pressure. This ensures it runs reliably even at high altitudes.
Our customer Fabian (“Tornado on Tour”) successfully used his Air 2D in a T3 van in Chile at 5032 m elevation – and it’s hard to find roads any higher than that! You can watch the short video he made here on YouTube.
Still important:
At very high altitudes, oxygen levels drop – and so does the heater’s maximum output. As a rule of thumb: From around 2000 m elevation, the heater loses about 5% of its power for every additional 500 m.
Also: The higher you go, the more sensitive the heater becomes to airflow resistance. So for high-altitude use, keep the air ducting as short and simple as possible – and avoid sharp bends! You can also completely remove the ducting during that time.
Maintenance: Don’t forget to burn it clean
Like any diesel engine, a diesel heater needs to reach operating temperature now and then to burn off residue. So when you come back down from the mountains, run it at full power for an hour. Same goes for long-term low-power use. Think of it like taking a diesel car out on the highway once in a while.
Easy to repair
Autoterm heaters are built for continuous operation and very robust.
Should anything go wrong, we’re an official Autoterm distributor with a full range of spare parts and workshop support based in Germany.
Good to know for long-term or remote travelers: The heater is designed for easy repair on the go, if necessary. Don’t hesitate to contact our support team if anything comes up!
Control units and panels
A control panel is included with the heater (just select your preferred version above). You can choose from the following models:
Simple Control Panel
Rotary dial for power control, optional temperature mode with separate sensor.
OLED Control Panel
Digital, with OLED display. Integrated temperature sensor (1.8 m cable), intuitive menu (currently English or Russian). Switchable between power and temperature modes.
Comfort Control Panel
Modern OLED display, menu navigation finally available in German, timer function, voltage display, thermostat mode, multifunction rotary dial – everything you need.
You’ll also find a direct comparison of the panels in our online magazine: Autoterm Control Panel Comparison – Modes, Features, Handling
The standard cable length for the control panel is 1.80 m. Various longer replacement or extension cables are available in our shop under Heater Accessories.
New: Since 2025, it’s also possible to connect two control units to one heater – for example, one near the bed or seating area and one in the cab. For this, an additional Push Control is optionally available – a compact, easy-to-use switch compatible with the Comfort Control.

Optional: Accessories & installation kits
We recommend a stainless steel mounting flange for much easier, stress-free installation and thermal decoupling. Most customers use this one here. Warm air ducting, splitters, vents, etc. are available in our accessories section – or just keep it simple and check out our ready-to-go installation kits – no need to gather individual parts, and everything fits perfectly. We offer a suitable kit for literally every installation scenario, so you’re sure to find the right one:
Our most popular: The 99% Camper Kit, so named because it's a perfect fit for 99% of all "normal" campers.
Not sure if the heating output is sufficient?
The 2 kW heating output is completely sufficient in most cases. The larger version, Air 4D, delivers 4 kW – and can quickly become "overkill" in smaller campers.
Our tip: It's better to regularly run the smaller heater at higher power than to constantly run the larger one at minimum power. This ensures clean combustion and extends its lifespan. If you really need full heating power but often only experience transitional temperatures, the TWIN Kit is the tool of choice.
